TAS BOOKS v8

How many users do I need?

If you have a workgroup or network edition of TAS BOOKS, you need to make sure you are set up for the correct number of users.

Pervasive Summit counts the number of computers accessing the workgroup or network engine at the same time - each individual computer accessing the engine counts as one user.  The user count is for the overall TAS system, not per company. For example, if you have a fiver-user workgroup, its not five users per company, its five users in total. To help you work out the number of users, consider the following:

  • As soon as you open TAS BOOKS, you will be accessing the database engine - and that counts as one user.
  • It doesnt matter how many companies you have open on the same computer, it only counts as one user.
  • If you also have a workgroup or network version of TAS Payroll this is included in the overall user count.
  • If you open a TAS BOOKS and a TAS Payroll program on the same computer, it counts as one user
  • If four people are using TAS BOOKS and one person is using TAS Payroll, that counts as five users
  • If three people are using TAS BOOKS and one person is using TAS Payroll - that counts as four users.
  • If you have a five-user workgroup and five people are using TAS BOOKS, if a sixth person tries to open TAS they will receive an error message.  They will not be able to open TAS until someone else logs out.

Which is the best option for me – a workgroup or a network?

There’s no hard and fast rule. It’s all about the power of the engine. Think of it as choosing what size engine you need when buying a delivery van.

If only a handful of people actually post transactions in TAS BOOKS, then you’ll only need a small van with a small engine. Inexpensive to buy, easy to run – it’ll get the job done. That’s the workgroup option.

If you have a lot of people using TAS BOOKS to process and post transactions, then you’ll benefit from a bigger, more powerful van. It costs a bit more to buy; but as you can fit more in, you can get all your deliveries done much faster. That’s the network option.
